Sample of the first short story in the Fantasy Island Anthology...
Prey
"You can't leave me" she begged. Payson had to fight the urge to glance in her direction, as the desk clerk behind the bullet proof glass barrier passed her belongs to her mother. Reluctantly Payson's eyes flickered to her, in her usual white gown a pale girl whose hollow eyes with deep dark circle stared back at her. Her fo...rm was as light as a feather as it flickered in and out of her perception. Her curly blond hair was wrapped tight in a pony tail while her clear grey eyes bore a hole into her face. Eyes for such a young face held anguish, pain, and maturity most adults quivered from. As she drew closer goosebumps formed all over Payson's body as the temperature in the room fell until she could see her breath-and of course she was the only one aware of it.
" You will not leave me" she persisted in a more menacing voice. The energy behind her words slammed into Payson knocking her back. Payson struggled to leave her face blank like the last couple of months she ignored her presence by chanting to herself, they don't exist, over and over again.
" Stay with me please" her voice broke at the end. Payson resolved slipped a fraction, but she remembered the years she spent with the stares, whispers and living with people who made her seem down right normal. No, she thought fiercely. They had taken her childhood from her, but they weren't going to take what's left of her adulthood.
She wasn't real. She was died, but Payson was alive and it was time she joined the living.
" Shall we" her mothers worried eyes glanced down at her.
" Yeah" a ghost of a smile curved her lips up. It seemed to appease her mother, her shoulders relaxed after she realized Payson wasn't going to have an "Episode".
" No one will understand you like I did. They will throw you back in here, you just see" she crossed her arms while smirking at her, taking a different tactic.
" I have to try" her voiced hardened. Failure wasn't an option, she couldn't back here-determination gave the confidence she need to leave this place forever.
" Did you say something darling" her mother eyes flickered to her as her conversation with a nurse stopped dead, suspicion laced her voice.
" Can we get out of here already" she said anxiously.
As her mother pushed her to the door a broken moan shook the room causing Payson to shiver-immune to it her mother continued to push her toward the door. Just when her mother open the door and light seeped into the room battling the seeds of madness, a whisper of a child voice reached her ears, " Please don't leave me".
" Goodbye Lily" Payson answered her best friend regretfully. The sun was high in the sky its beams hitting Lily's blond hair giving her a halo. She stood at the top of the stairs, alone and unable to follow her friend. Her figure was like looking through glass, fading as she drew further away from St. Benedict Asylum-until finally she disappeared completely.
